Atlantic Cod Farms AS, Norway: Design of world's largest land-based cod fry facility
Marine Construction has acted as chief designer and advisor to Atlantic Cod Farms during the engineering and construction phase of its new land-based facility at the Tjeldbergodden BioPark. This state-of-the-art cod fry facility is located 140 km from the city of Trondheim.
Numerous technical challenges were solved for the Atlantic Cod facility inside the multi-purpose BioPark at Tjeldbergodden.
The pre-heated water (18ºC average temperature) supplied by the nearby Statoil gas processing facility is to be mixed with cold deep water from a new pumping station, in order to create optimal growing conditions for the cod at its early stages of development. Two separate water-processing plants, each consisting of two identical units, were designed and installed. This gives Atlantic Cod Farms maximum flexibility in temperature regulation, allowing for four different temperature regimes in various sections of the farming area.
In full production, this huge land-based tank facility will have an annual capacity of 10 million pieces of cod fry, each weighing 150 grams. These fry are transferred to cage farming, where they reach market size of 3–4 kg.
Marine Construction congratulates Atlantic Cod Farms with this tremendous achievement in their pursuit of leadership in modern cod farming.
